Welcome to Airville State School

Airville State School, 920 Old Clare Road, is a small, rural primary school located within the Burdekin District, 10 km up-river from the nearest town of Ayr. It is also within close proximity to the towns of Home Hill and Brandon. Airville State School caters for children from the preparatory year through to year 6. It was opened on 2nd September, 1890 and celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2015 with: an outdoors ceremony; community barbeque; entertainment by local groups and present and past students; as well as historical and photographic displays of the changes over the years.   The school’s celebration was well attended with many past students and families travelling long distances to attend to return to their primary school and to reminisce on their days at Airville.
Over the past 125 years the school’s population has fluctuated, with it reaching approximately 130 children in the mid to late 1990s.  The school population has decreased since that time to its current population of 22 children, who all live within close proximity to the school.  The school is located within a rural area and is surrounded by cane with no township within its catchment area.
Children engage with learning experiences in two class groupings which are subject to change on a yearly basis in response to total enrolments.  In 2017, Group One consists of children from the Preparatory year through to Year 3.  Group Two is made up of children from Years 4 to Year 6 with students in each year level.  A transition to Prep  program is run each year in Term 4 with future students invited to participate in school based activities once a week.  These activities also include our annual Under 8’s day.  On this occasion, children from Year 4 to Year 6 assist with supervising activities and engaging the younger students in the activities.  Local kindergarten  groups are also invited to attend.  Children in Year 5 and Year 6 participate in a Transition to High School program that is coordinated by the local state high schools.
Extra curricular activities such as an annual camp for students in Years 4 to 6 and extended swimming lessons for all students from Prep to Year 6 are also offered. Children are encouraged to participate.  Participation in local choral competitions is also encouraged, with the school’s choral groups enjoying high levels of success at these competitions.
The school’s motto is:  Always Your Best.   To be the best you can be in all that you do is strongly encouraged at the school.
We welcome your interest in our school and encourage you to read more about our school.
